Free Course Weekend: Strategies and Insights from VueSchool

This weekend, November 4th and 5th, VueSchool offered their premium and masterclass courses for free. VueSchool offers front-end courses on Vue.js, which I am not familiar with. However, I decided to take advantage of the opportunity this weekend and provide some of the strategies and insights while learning a new skill over the weekend.

Strategies

Below are four strategies I took when taking free courses at VueSchool this weekend.

  1. Before the free weekend courses began, I looked at all the courses they offered on their website. This gave me an idea of what to expect.
  2. Even though I was not familiar with Vue School offering courses on Vue.js, I thought about how this could help me in my current job and my future career.
  3. VueSchool currently offers over 55 courses, from beginners to intermediate to advanced. I wrote in my notebook which courses I wanted to take. I focused on the ones that are related to testing, automation, and accessibility, which were about four.
  4. When the courses opened this weekend, I started with the courses that had the least number of lessons and the most time to complete. Then progress to the next course.
Insights

Below are insights from my weekend journey with testing and learning at VueSchool.

  1. Don’t be afraid to learn a new skill. Even though I was not familiar with Vue.js, I decided to take on the challenge to learn the basics.
  2. It’s ok not to complete all the courses that you had planned. My plan was to take four courses, which were:
    1. Test with Jest: Completed
    2. JavaScript Testing Fundamentals: Completed
    3. Rapid Testing with Vitest—Not Completed
    4. Web Accessibility Fundamentals: Completed
  3. There is an old saying: ‘Practice makes perfect’. I decided to focus on understanding the course by following along with the video lessons. In addition, I researched different websites and other resources from that course that helped me practice and understand better.
  4. Keep learning. Even though the free weekend is over, VueSchool offers on their website free courses to continue to understand vue.js, so I plan to take advantage of those free courses.
Conclusion

Taking courses from VueSchool this weekend was a great opportunity to learn a new skill, especially in testing, which will help me in my future career. Also, it made me think about other courses online that usually cost money to take, especially if they help or complement your job or future career.

What are your thoughts about taking courses that usually cost money but are free for a limited time?
